We are at the WiFi Tipping Point!

So why if you are shopping for a new wireless solution would you buy a solution with 50/50 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios?
So why if you are shopping for a new wireless solution would you buy a solution with 50/50 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios?

The wireless age is upon us. There are now more wireless devices in the World than people. Wireless is more versatile than wired because you are not tethered to a location. Wireless can be as fast or faster than the wired connections and most wireless systems now can manage the network traffic at the edge, instead of allowing it to traverse the network to be managed by the firewall.

Most locations have wireless. Even the local coffee shops are offering free Wi-Fi to their customers. Everywhere you go there is a free Wi-Fi network available to allow you to connect your device to the Internet.

It used to be that wireless networks were less secure than their wired counterparts, but that has changed with the introduction of new capabilities and features. WPA2 and AES are the newest and most secure encryptions available. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is used by most governments around the world, including the United States. Radius authentication and Two Factor Authentication (2FA) are being introduced for business networks, which increases the security significantly.  The new wireless standards are introducing faster speeds, full duplex and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), allowing a single device to have wireless speeds faster than 1Gb.

The introduction of 5Ghz has increased the number of channels that can be utilized, allowing for faster speeds. There is also more channel space and larger channel bonds, which allow for higher bandwidth. In well-tuned environments, we are seeing 80% of devices utilizing 5Ghz.

So why, if you are shopping for a new wireless solution, would you buy a solution with 50/50 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios? Wireless vendor, Xirrus pioneered software programmable radio years ago. This allows an integrator or end-user to effectively deploy a proper proportion of radios to cover a given area.

In well-tuned environments 5Ghz adaptation is commonly witnessed approaching 80%. See below for real examples of client 5Ghz usage versus 2.4Ghz usage.
